Exhibition: ‘I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore’ in Amstelveen Stadshart
I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore
Imagine your house is lifted by a heavy storm and lands in a completely different place. You step out of the door, and the world suddenly changes completely. Not only the surroundings but also the people, the manners, the rules and the logic. You walk around uneasy and try to figure out where you are and how everything works in this strange place. ‘I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore’, says Dorothy in the film The Wizard of Oz (1939) when she ends up in a similar situation.
This theme inspires the exhibition. Today, Dorothy’s exclamation is used figuratively to describe situations that deviate from the norm. The theme touches on contemporary social developments and the dilemmas we face as individuals in a rapidly changing society.
Established and emerging artists
Thirteen artists have been invited to reflect on the theme. The selection consists of emerging and established artists, including students who recently graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and established artists with an international reputation. The exhibition consists of new and existing work.
Artist initiative
I’ve got a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore is an initiative of artists Robbert Weide, Thom van Rijckevorsel, and Anne-Marie van Meel. The organization is very grateful to the Municipality of Amstelveen for its support in putting on the exhibition.
